ANNE E.'S JOURNAL - January 24, 2008

Janary 24, 2008

Hello hello to you.

Well, this is coming to you late because I slept in today. I was up at 4:30a.m. yesterday and could not get back to sleep so I got up and started working. I worked all day and into the evening. By 9:30 I was beat. I haven't gone to bed that early since the 7th grade (I think that's a line from "When Harry Met Sally"). Anyway, that's why this is later than usual.

Some exciting news yesterday and that is that the official release of "Kate Clinton 25th Anniversary Tour" from All Out Films (www.alloutfilms.com) was yesterday. This is the film in which my song "When We Are Old" (From Something of the Soul) was used. The song is in the ending credits (I think it's known as the "crawl" in movie lingo). Kate Clinton is a comedienne and was the MC at Cleveland Pride a few years ago. She is really funny and also a very beautiful woman. I also found out that the documentary is airing on Logo Network (Visit: www.logoonline.com for the schedule) But you know what? I don't think you'll hear "When We Are Old" because on television they speed up the credits and play different music while they are promoting the next show. So much for living in the moment. Maybe I'll send Logo the book, The Power of Now and ask them to read it. Then I might get some performance royalties. But they'll probably just look at it, toss it and then ask, "what's the new best selling book?" Anyway, it's the first time I've had a song in a film and I'm really excited. I thank Andrea Meyerson, the producer, director and founder of All Out Films, for the opportunity. The film has also won "Best Comedy" at the Dallas Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Please visit www.alloutfilms.com and order your copy of the DVD and check out all the great stuff they have going on.. A showing of the film is in the works with myself and the Nickel. I'll keep you informed....They'll play the credits. Also you should know that the TV version is much different than the DVD version. Check both out.

The Free Times are gearing up for their annual awards show. I'm no longer eligible to be nominated as last year I was one of three or four of us who were awarded the Free Times All Star Award which basically means. "we've won enough, we're sick of you and get off the stage. To me it means I don't have to be nervous any more. I really would get nervous about being nominated and then having to go to the show and wait to hear the results. So I'm happy as a clam. I don't know if I'm presenting this year but I'll let you know. Really I just like to go to the show and smoke with Robin Stone and Alexis Antes. I don't smoke normally but we get together and it's like the set of "Good Night and Good Luck". So anyway, I want to let you know that Paul Lewis who plays bass in my band and in The Jack Fords has once again been nominated. This guy needs to win people If you'd like to vote visit http://www.freetime.com/html/music_vote.html

So now I'm going to tell you a little tale from my childhood. It involves 4 messy kids and their mom....When I was young my brother and two sisters and I barely did anything but play, eat, fight and go to school. My mom did practically everything around the house. I mean we had jobs that rotated like doing the dishes, taking out the garbage and one other one I can't remember. My mom did everything else. I think really she was very particular about the way things were done that she probably didn't want us messing it up. Plus I just think she had this sense of duty. Anyway she would get up with us every morning before school and make breakfast, attend every event we were involved in, pack our lunches and serve dinner every night at 5:30. Laundry was not only done but folded, put in its respective piles and set on the dryer for us to take to our rooms. So my dressing room basically, was in front of the dryer! I mean that's how lazy we could be. We didn't even have the strength to take the pile to our room and put it in the dressers.

Well, as you might imagine our room was a mirror image of our laziness. I found that many clothing items could be found on the floor of my room instead of the closet. I think my older brother Rob and older sister Amy were much better than I. As adults they're total neat freaks. But I know my area (later my own room) was usually a mess and their's must have been because my mom would flip out sometimes and really let us have it. I think sometimes we were not allowed to do anything until it was cleaned up to her satisfaction. But one day she really flipped out and yelled, "If I find your rooms this way one more time, I'm going to throw everything out the window! Then you can pick it up outside!" Well at this point we all shared a room on the second floor. As her words blazed in from another room somewhere in the house, I just pictured my half slip floating down from the window upstairs onto the fence below. Of course we were like, "whatever" clapped are hands quietly and chanted a little mantra (my first venture into R&B) we liked to do when she was in such a state... "Woman (clap clap), woman (clap), woman (clap clap) woman (clap)" and went about our day. As I'm sure you have gathered, my mother had quite the dramatic flair. And as time went on, we grew somewhat accustomed to it and often ignored her threats. But threats were often really promises....

One day my sister Amy and I were walking home from the bus stop. We were busy talking to our friends. I was probably thinking about making my latest snack (I would get addicted to a snack for about a month then move on to something else. It usually involved peanut butter mixed with something) and what was going on on General Hospital that day. Well, I remember looking up and seeing something in our bushes. What the heck I thought. As we moved closer I noticed more things in the yard on the fence and front porch. It was colorful....As we moved closer, it came clearly into view. Oh my God it was my half slip.. and my pajama bottoms! Pictures of dirty underwear being seen by my friends and neighbors flashed before me. I started running. My sister and I spent the next few minutes frantically picking up our clothes that had been thrown out the upstairs window and lofted down to create a collage of our mother's frustration. It's the fastest we've ever picked up anything....We all have very clean rooms now.... "Woman (clap clap) woman (clap) Woman (clap clap) woman (clap).
