ANNE E.'S JOURNAL -April 11, 2007

April 11, 2007

Ok, hello hello!

'Tis I, the hopeful and cheery lady that you heard from last Wednesday. You know the one going on about how lovely it is that spring had sprung, how beautiful the flowers (I even linked you to the Wordsworth poem, "Daffodils" for the love of Pete!), how wonderful the warmth and sun. By the time last Wednesday's email was sent, I was waking to the BIG S!!!!! I felt like a jerk!

I paid for my childish innocence (not letting go!) all weekend long!

The price paying started with my solo trip to The Greenville Inn. The cards were already stacked against me with the last minute switch of dates (I was originally schedule for Thurs., April 5th) but to add to that, was the pouring down of the white stuff (and I don't mean the "white fox" as Kelly has named it....And no, we don't have a relationship with "Cocaine" as Stevie Nicks did in the 70's. We also don't have one with Lindsay Buckingham). Oh my gosh. It was crazy. At times it was a complete white out. I almost started singing "Jesus Take the Wheel" but I didn't write it and could not collect any performance royalties for a performance in my car so I just stayed quiet. Plus I already sang it at The ALUCC one Sunday and that'll be enough of that. So I just kept thinking about how much I like the atmosphere at The Greenville and got myself there...."CLICK HERE TO READ MORE" and/or visit their website here.

Then Friday night I found myself in my truck again, this time with Matt, Kelly and Erin, looking once again, at a white out. We went to The Outpost, already a challenging spot for us, in the snow. We played a great show. We hung out a bit....It's a great big club. No, it is not a strip club, please! Yes, it used to be. But it's not now. It's a music venue. It has a bar, a cool juke box, funny and smart bartenders; ones name is, I think, Lacy and I don't know the guys name but I bet Kelly does (he and she talked about some kind of butter dish he found at a gallery), a great stage with nice lighting and the sound is wonderful. Yes, it is out a ways. No, you cannot bar hop unless you're a pretty big rabbit and yes, when it snows out there, there is very little to light your way home. But don't be such a baby. Come on people now! Take a walk on the wild side! Get out to The Outpost. Are you trying to get me fired?
Anyway, it snowed all night. It snowed before the show. It snowed during the show. It snowed after the show. It snowed while I ordered my Shmuffin from Sheetz, it snowed while we dropped Matt off at his house, it snowed and snowed. Erin drove, we all talked and talked. It snowed and snowed. We stopped to check on a couple who fell off the road in their truck. It snowed. They said they were ok, had a phone and help. It snowed. I'm not a very good passenger (in a car or a plane) and couldn't help thinking of Jessica Tandy in the movie "Best Friends" starring Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hahn. She has a great line in the film and delivers it as you would expect her to. The line is "Snow kills." It's a good one.
So we made it home.

Saturday night? Same thing. Different venue same snow. I finished the Easter Eve service at the ALUCC. It was pretty darn good. It snowed before the service. It snowed during the service. It snowed after the service on the way to The Barking Spider. So we get to the Spider, Matt's there, Martin's there, some people are there. Not like what we're used to at the Spider. We did our show. It was pretty great and fun. Although it did not take me as long to count the money from the tip jar. Those who were there were super generous and I thank you all. You are the brave, the proud, but I don't think the marines (are any of you?). So we then hung out, danced a little to a cover of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" and then hit the road. Snow, snow, snow on the way to Steve's Lunch...Awesome Cleveland landmark at:

to get some chili dogs. I met officer Dooley too! Can you imagine. I felt like I might be in the movie, "It's a Wonderful Life".
The streets of Cleveland were just beautiful...beautiful. What a great night.

Hey check out this link http://www.cleveland.com/obituary/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/117619482544291.xml&coll=2#continue
to read a story about Joan Hrubec, former International Women's Air & Space Museum director.

Joan died on Feb. 17th at the age of 75. The story is written by Cleveland Plain Dealer reporter Alana Baranick. It is entitled "A lifelong love of flying machines" I thank my sister Amy for calling me to tell me about the story in Monday's Plain Dealer. This is a woman who grew up during WWII. She is not one of the "Rosie the Riveters" per say, in that she did not work in a factory during WWII. She was a young girl during the war. But she caught the flying bug, built model planes, carved model planes, went for rides in her uncle's plane and eventually grew to be the woman who brought the International WomensÕ Air and Space Museum to Cleveland where it still is today. The museum has free admission. Check it out. http://www.iwasm.org
Joan Hrubec was a maverick. And mavericks can help to change our lives. She's a woman who by her very living, taught many to live daringly, to learn, to go against the grain all in pursuit of what you love to do. It's a wonderful story.

Caroline (Connie) Luhta the current President, of the International Women's Air & Space Museum, is quoted in the article. I had the pleasure of meeting Connie along with IWASM Executive Director, Toni Mullee, at City Hall on March 28th. I was invited by Mayor Jackson's office to sing at this "Our City Our Arts" event. Ms. Luhta gave a great lecture on women in Air and Space. She shared so many interesting stories. After performing at the event, I presented Ms. Luhta with a copy of "Girls and Airplanes". I hope to talk with her and Toni more about the possibilities for us cooperating in order to bring the stories of these great women to the people of the Cleveland community and beyond. The stories of these women are an inspiration. They should be shared!

Anyway that's that. I sure am glad I love what I do. I'm glad that Matt and Kelly do too. And we ROCK! I hope you enjoyed your weekend and that you were able to cast away expectations of spring in order to enjoy one last blast of winter. It was beautiful and I'm glad I live in a place where the seasons change. I hope you are too. If not, go to Florida next week to see me perform! Meagan and Megan and Brandy are venturing out to St. Petersburg next week. Why don't you? By the way thanks Meagan and Megan for wearing your Second Class Citizen shirts (see photo here and order yours too) at the Final 4 and at The Indigo Girls concert! You're the best!

Here's a list of upcoming shows including those in Florida.
Till then, take it easy.

Peace,
-Anne E.
