ANNE E.'S JOURNAL - May 24, 2007 - "Church" the game.
May 24, 2007 "Church" was the game. My big sister Amy would put my mom's half slip over hear head (it was black) and be a nun. I was the priest and I wore some kind of vestment, probably a robe. We would make the big host with bread by turning a glass upside down and pressing on the bread. It did make a perfect circle. Oh how I loved to hold the host up and hear the bells ringing. My mom would be my parishioner. She joined in the singing, listened to me read from our huge bible (where everything Jesus said was printed in red), respond "thanks be to God" when I was finished with each reading and come up for communion. My sister, the nun, would also come up for communion. She and her black habit.
I remember the smell of dinner happening at the same time that the "Church of the Living Room" was hosting the Sunday services. When my father would occasionally bring home Neccos from BF Goodrich where he worked, it was a really big day. Then we had custom hosts of various colors not just the broken up crust that was left over from making the big, priest host. It was great. And ah the day when the pewter candy dish showed up. I don't know where my mom got it but I do know that when I lay my eyes on that beauty with the tapered stem, brushed silver tone, and etching around the rim, all I saw was, my new challis! The Neccos fit so nicely in it.
I don't know if I ever gave a sermon. My mom probably knows. Something tells me that I would have been too embarrassed. Anyway, "Church" is a great game.
I met a guy at a show recently at the United Church of Christ National Offices in downtown Cleveland who also used to play church. I did a show in Amistad Chapel there at the end of April. It was a performance for UCC Pastors and many in the ministry from all over the country. Anyway I was telling them a little bit about "Church" and my big sister wearing the slip, when this guy's friend pointed to him and said, "He used to". I said, "play church?" "Yes" he said. Then I asked, "Were you the priest?" "No" he was not. He used to wear the half slip.! Oh he was so cute! It's great to know there are more of us out there.
Now I'm wondering if anyone else used to use their mom's and dad's shoes for Barbie's and Ken's cars!!!!! That's another story....and yes, I was always Ken!
