ANNE E.'S JOURNAL - June 6, 2007 - V-Day and "Girls and Airplanes"!
June 6, 2007 Okay, hello everyone. How are you?
Tonight I was freezing and had to turn my heat on! How about that? What the fo? (Just trying to bring back some phrases/saying from the Ô80s....as if!)
Well work continues on the upcoming CD. ThereÕs so much to do but the schedule is coming together and thatÕs a relief. ItÕs nice to have a map finally to help guide the way. I never thought IÕd have so much to do with schedules! Releasing a CD is a multi-faceted affair. Yes, I surely wish it was just walking out into the footlights, stepping to the mic and strumming away. Hopefully all of this continues to build character...some kind of character at least. Really, IÕm looking forward to seeing it all come together. Keep your eyes and ears open in the next few weeks.
Thanks to those of you who came out to last weekÕs shows. It was a beautiful week for performing. Nice to see people outside.
More good news having to do with some of my music being Òpicked upÓ....As you may or may not know, ÒV-Day is a global movement to end violence against women and girls. Northeast Ohio has been producing V-Day events since 2001". I was included in some of the first events involving V-Day when I was asked to be a guest performer in the Vagina Monologues here in Cleveland. I got to perform with actors Starla Benford and Sherri Parker Lee who were the two permanent actors in this production that toured all over the country. We performed at Cleveland Music Hall.
That was my introduction to this work by Eve Ensler and my introduction to helping to support the V-Day Fund. I must tell you that just before going out on stage on the night of my first performance I was an absolute wreck. I was standing in the wings behind Starla with Sherri waiting for the cue to walk on stage (I may have been thinking ÒletÕs not say we didÓ-remember that one? Patti and Doug from KelleyÕs Island Brewery want to bring that one back). Anyway, Starla turned to me, probably got a look at me, and said, Òdo you want to hold my finger?Ó So I grabbed onto her finger (my little support line) and she lead me out to the stage. All I was thinking was, ÒYou idiot! Why did you agree to do this?Ó Seriously, I was so nervous. My nerves subsided somewhat as time went on but when it comes to performing, next to standing on the starting line in any race in high school track or cross country, this was about the most nervous I have been. But I did it! ItÕs good to jump in sometimes and then figure out if you can actually swim.
My performance at Music Hall led me to more including two more acting roles in the Vagina Monologues (will I ever learn?) and a singing performance for another Until The Violence Stops; North East Ohio (UTVS:NEO) event. Kelly that one with me. I thank Donna Rizor Longfellow for getting me involved and introducing me to Deb Lemire. Both of these women have been instrumental in making so many V-Day events come to life.
The history of work created by UTVS:NEO, Òled the V-Day Foundation in New York to invite us to be one of only two communities in the United States to produce a V-Festival in 2007. We hope to reach at least 600,000 people with the message that violence against women and girls must end.Ó(Deb Lemire-organizer) So this year thatÕs whatÕs happening! The festival runs from June 17-July 1. There are 3 Main Marquee events and a Grand Finale at JacobÕs Field on July 1. There are also dozens of Community Events throughout Northeast Ohio. Please please visit www.utvsneo.org to view the events calendar. See which events youÕd like to attend, volunteer, help pass out flyers, produce your own community event.
So how will I participate this year? Well, not in person because IÕll be in Florida performing and preparing for the CD Release on July 13th. I was asked to perform in a work written by Maya Angelou. Now I would have frigginÕ done it again! I would have acted again. How could I turn down an opportunity like that? But I had to. I was already booked in Florida. But hereÕs what I came up with....I offered my song ÒGirls and AirplanesÓ to be used at any and all events around the V-Festival. And guess what. On July 1st, at the V-FestivalÕs Grand Finale at Jacobs Field, ÒGirls and AirplanesÓ will be premiered as the Ceremonial walk in the name of peace takes place around the field! IÕm so honored. IÕm so excited at the thought of the song being played while people march for peace! ItÕs awesome! I thank UTVS:NEO for letting me contribute in this way. ItÕs what you hope for your music to do.
If youÕd like to read Deb LemireÕs comments about the song being included, click here ( Ticket to the Grand Finale are available through the website at www.utvsneo.org.)
I will remind you more about the V-Festival each week up until and through it. Be sure to check next week for news about KellyÕs involvement!
