ANNE E.'S JOURNAL - November 21, 2007 - Penny's From Heaven a Success! Christmas CD Available!
November 21, 2007 Hello to all of you. I hope as you are receiving this, you are at the tail end of your work week and ready to enjoy a nice long weekend. You deserve it. I will be in Florida over the weekend playing two shows at A Taste for Wine in St. Petersburg. I play on Wednesday and Friday night @ 8:30p.m. The night before Thanksgiving is always one of the biggest club nights so I always like to have a booking. IÕm looking forward to it.
This past weekend I had a great string of shows. It started on Friday night in Kent at the Kent State Folk FestÕs ÒFolk Alley Around TownÓ music series. All around Kent there were shows going on. People could walk the streets (as I often do) and pop on in to most clubs, cafes and galleries and catch some music. I was at The Black Squirrel Gallery on Main Street. Hosts Bob and Cass were wonderful and I hope I can return for another show there some time. When I arrived there was no one in the place except some Kent State students who were sent out to cover the event. They asked me questions as I set up my equipment and took some photos. By the time I started there was a nice group assembled and when I finished I had about 100 people in the room. It was a rush. I played for lots of people who have never heard me before which is always fun. IÕve got a nice group who purchased their first Anne E. DeChant CD as a result. Thanks to the Kent State Folk Festival for inviting me once again to be a part of the festivities.
Saturday I traveled to Louisville to ÒAll Thru the HomeÓ to do the benefit show for PennyÕs From Heaven. My friend Linda, who I wrote about in last weekÕs email, planned the event with her friend Renee, owner of All Thru the Home. A goal I had in mind was to help Linda raise over $700.00 which was last yearÕs earnings. So many wonderful people donated Christmas items which were sold. 100% of the money earned went to PennyÕs From Heaven. At the end of my show I asked Linda how she thought she did. She said she thought they had earned about $1500.00 Well, I received word from Linda today and she has raised $2500.00! Wonderful. Thank you to all of you who came out to do some Christmas shopping, enter a raffle or donate. You are appreciated One of my loyal listeners, Tanya, donated a beautiful gift basket full of candy. Tanya makes candy.. She just met Linda at a show and decided to donate. Those are the kind of people IÕm lucky enough to meet. TheyÕre everywhere. Thank you Tanya and thank you to all who made a donation. As a result, Linda will be sending a big fat check to Phoenix Rising in Canton. The money will go to help children with AIDS.
On Saturday night, I met Pete Cavano at Thorncreek Winery and we did a show there. It was a great night. I must recommend ThorncreekÕs bruschetta. It is awesome. Maureen, the editor from Epitome Magazine was in the audience with her friend Shannon who is hysterical. Maureen brought me last monthÕs issue of Epitome which has a nice story on me and the new CD. Thank you to Epitome.
Then on Sunday I had the CrossRoadÕs Service at the Avon Lake UCC. The ALUCC has a day care, Jack and Jill. Each year I go into the school and work with the teachers and children on a couple of songs. Then the children join us at the service and sing for their parents and the congregation. This year we had 25 children, ages 3 and 4. They rocked the house with their hit single ÒMagic PennyÓ READ LYRICS TO MAGIC PENNY and then an original I wrote for the service called, ÒThank You GodÓ. They were great and the church was packed. We also did a really great version of This Little Light of Mine. The band sounded great. I hope some of those people in the congregation that night will decide to join us again.
I visited Eastview Elementary School this week to be a guest reader for the Penguin books reading program. This is where I graduated from Kindergarten. Ah, who can forget the graduation day May Pole dance? I can still remember holding the crepe paper and dancing around the pole. It was quite a big deal. I did like Kindergarten. There was one boy in my class, Brian Winter, who could read. Well, I wasnÕt having it, so I pretended I could read. I remember sitting with him at a table one day. He had some huge ass book and was reading it. I think I had a pair of lefty scissors in my hand and was cutting out some shapes or something. Anyway, it was then, that I let him know that I two enjoyed a good book and a cup of coffee. He then asked me about a specific book. He asked if I had read it. I said, ÒYes, it was very interestingÓ. That was about it. I donÕt know if he believed me or not.
Anyway, I went back to that place where I constructed such lies and danced around a May Pole, to read to a group of 4th graders. They were great Children make me nervous because, seriously, they can be ruthless. YouÕve read Lord of the Flies Anyway, they were excellent. I read Thank you Mr. Falker. I know what youÕre thinking. I was thinking the same thing when I heard the title. I asked the teacher how to say the name just in case. I thought I might laugh but I did not. It was a story about a little girl who could not wait to read but when it came time she could not. I think she was dyslexic. Anyway her teacher, Mr. Falker, figured it out and worked with her until she could read. It was really good and almost started crying a couple of times during the reading.
After the book the kids had all kinds of questions about my music, where I live, where I sing, whether or not I have any CDs (thatÕs when I opened the magic trunk full of cds and let them know that not only did I take lunch money, but I would take a check or credit card too ). Any way they made me feel like a big star and IÕll take that any day. I played George for them and Girls and Airplanes. Folks this is not your mom and dadÕs or your elementary school. I began teaching them about Rosie the Riveter. The teacher motored over to her computer which is linked to a huge screen and flashed the image of Rosie Unbelievable and what a great teaching tool. So we rocked out to Girls and Airplanes. I really enjoyed it. Thank you to Julie Grosel, from Eastview Elementary, for asking me to participate. It was my pleasure.
