February 22, 2007 - FREEDOM FIGHTER Tim is a former Cleveland police officer but is now an officer in the armed forces. He and I sat down after the show and talked for a while about why he's volunteering to go back, what he believes about the war and what he feels he brings in the way of peace/a better life for people. War is such a complicated mess and I feel constantly spinning from information received from so many different sources. God gave me a brain I try to use it! I did give Tim a copy of "Pop The Star" and asked him to listen to "Freedom Fighter" if he wanted. He really enjoyed our show so I took the opportunity to share some of my thoughts by giving him a CD. Believe me, I've had discussions on the song and, as one would guess, have received some interesting feedback. One gentleman disagrees with the underlying belief I have that caused me to write a verse in my song "Freedom Fighter". That verse is.... "I am my countryÕs soldier, I would die keeping her from harm, with my fire and gun, I will do what must be done, and IÕll do it with a disregard for me" The thought behind those line is, that if a soldier can have disregard for her or himself in order to be a soldier in war, then she or he can, in turn, disregarding any other human being and that is not the way of peace. The gentleman who wrote about "Freedom Fighter" had an opposite opinion. He believed that in so doing (disregarding oneself) you show that you have regard for others over yourself. I can see both points of view. But I would ask then, who do you have regard for over yourself, who have you chosen to kill or to die for? You must choose one to kill and one to die for. And are they a human being? Or if itÕs a cause at what real price? I donÕt know the answer. What a tough, tough topic, seriously it can drive you crazy! I think Clint Eastwood (producer/director) and Steven SpielbergÕs (producer) recent release of both, "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima"is a vehicle with which one can feel the pain of war and love humanity from two distinct and different vantage points. Peace Peace....
